Warren A. May  Woodworker

Berea, Kentucky

ANNOUCEMENT:

My traditional Kentucky dulcimers are the easiest instruments on which to play tunes by number, or to strum rhythm style and sing with the three basic chords. All models may have the 6 1/2 fret added to make my dulcimers the most versatile available, capable of playing very well in all major tunings with exquisite tone and clarity.

Native Kentuckian Warren May has spent his lifetime working with wood. Born and raised in a 2 story log home in Carroll County, Warren was the youngest of 10 children. He earned his Bachelor and Master degrees from Eastern Kentucky University where he was trained in classical woodworking. He has more than 40 years of experience in teaching and professional furniture and dulcimer making.

Both the furniture on display and the Kentucky mountain dulcimers are made by Warren and his assistants in his workshop located on his farm. Hand work is completed at this location - including hand carving on furniture, the dovetailing of drawers, cutting of dulcimer soundholes, the installation of frets, and the final "stringing" of the dulcimers.

NATIVE WOODS from here in central Kentucky - walnut, cherry, and poplar are used. Basically, my finish is one coat oil, 4 coats lacquer on furniture, and lacquer only on the mountain dulcimers. Occasionally, less formal pieces are finished in oil only.

THE APPALACHIAN DULCIMER is a traditional Kentucky instrument and I have made over 15,000. I have tried to maintain the mountain dulcimers authentic design including details such as the handcarved scroll, edge beading, and overall soft, sweet sound.

All models may have the 6 1/2 fret added to make my dulcimers the most versatile available, capable of playing very well in all major tunings with exquisite tone and clarity.

ALL FINISHED WORK on display is available for sale. A good selection of dulcimers is on hand at all times. Furniture is available on a first-come, first served basis. Many pieces are one of a kind and cannot be duplicated. All work is from my own designs.

Warren's furniture and mountain dulcimers have been featured in Popular Woodworking, Fine Woodworking, and Woodwork magazines, and seen on HGTV and Scott Phillips' The American Woodshop.

Warren's work may also be found in Southern Hands by Jan Arnow, Kentucky Crafts by Phyllis George, and Hearts and Hands: Musical Instrument Makers of America by Jake Jacobson.
